Reaction on: A Trip to the Moon
The movie A Trip to the Moon was taken in the year 1902. It is a French film directed by Georges Méliès. It was about a group of astronomers who had made a canon-propelled spaceship that can send them flying to the moon. Exploring the moon’s surface there they have discovered that the place were inhabited my aliens called Selenites. After being captured and chased by those foreign life-forms, they managed to escape by literally falling back to earth without knowing one alien had able to grab on the ship and had come with them. They made it captive as the astronomers celebrated the success of their journey.
Thinking of the context of what they people may have been in in the time of the launch of that movie, it would make you feel overwhelmed of the how far human’s imagination could go. Well, some concepts in the movie contradicts the common logic of science when in space like what we have discovered today such as 1) the presence of foreign life-forms is still just theoretically accepted, 2) there is no oxygen in space so you cannot simply come out of space in normal-clothed fashion and 3) you cannot simply come back to earth just by the means of gravitational pull exerted by the earth.
If I were present in the presentation of the movie, I’d partly be a believer and partly skeptical because in that time, I’d still be ignorant about things outside our world. And but because that also I’d be skeptical for the fact that those things showed may not be exactly as it is in reality.
The first man ever to leave earth’s atmosphere in the year 1961 was, Yuri Gagarin, a Russian pilot and cosmonaut. And I believe that his voyage wasn’t conducted in the way how in the movie Trip to the Moon was done. But you come to think of it, the years of gap between the launching of the Trip to the Moon and the year the first man ever went outside earth was for more than 50 years. It’d amaze you to realize humans idea on space adventures are almost coinciding to what is real right now.
At the end of the day, the movie’s main purpose was just to entertain viewers. Still, it had made great impact in science’s success of today. It is what I always state that through man’s imagination have given way to what us, society, and the world had become today.
