Last week we were made to watch the film called “The Fly”, an American science fiction film released in 1958. I found the film’s story quite interesting as it dealt with a matter teleporter device that is actually in the present being developed by scientists. Moreover I found the campy acting of the main characters quite amusing plus the costumes and technical effects obviously dated.
I think the scientist featured in the story, Andre Delambre, represented what the society demanded of him: to discover and develop new technology that would benefit humankind. However in his pursuit of this, he paid a great price: his life. As Peter Parker’s uncle Ben famously said, “With great power comes great responsibility”, a powerful thing such as science needs to be used and evaluated fairly, taking into account what is ethically right from wrong.
Decades have gone by since the film’s release but its message is still of value today. Science is the great “search for the truth” and although most beneficial, also the most dangerous journey there is.
